Marienkirche (Lindos)
The Marienkirche ( Panagia von Lindos ) ( Greek Παναγία της Λίνδου ) in Lindos on Rhodes , which is almost completely built into the narrow streets of the old town, was built in the 15th century and is especially worth seeing for its frescoes .
description
An older cross-domed church from the 14th century consecrated to the Mother of God was rebuilt in 1489/90 in the Gothic style on behalf of Pierre d'Aubusson , the Grand Master of the Order of St. John . To the west, the building was extended by an open narthex (vestibule) with a ribbed vault. The church itself shows a Latin cross with a pointed barrel vault. One above the crossing rises drum dome . A free-standing bell tower was later built.
The frescoes inside the church around 1800 show the story of creation in the upper strip . The band below shows the twenty highest church festivals . The Akathistos hymn is illustrated below. Saints are shown in the lower register, including a Saint Christopher with a dog's head. The floor of the church is covered with the pebbles that are common here.
museum
A small museum belongs to the church, in which liturgical vestments and ancient books are shown free of charge.
