When climbing peak is known in the climbing areas Saxon Switzerland , Zittau Mountains and climbing areas in adjacent uplands freestanding rocks that only by climbing least the difficulty  I on the UIAA scale can be reached or by jumping from neighboring rocks or massifs. As a rule, a notch height of at least 10 m is considered necessary for this. In Saxon Switzerland, however , the Saxon climbing rules do not require a minimum height, but define climbing peaks merely as "free-standing rocks [...] which can only be climbed by climbing or by attacking, stepping over or jumping from neighboring rocks [...]." Another requirement is this Recognition by the responsible SBB commission and the responsible nature conservation authority. For hikers, these recognized peaks can often be recognized by the existing summit book and the abseil loop .

In other climbing areas, for example in Bohemian Switzerland, there are exceptions. There, climbing peaks only need to have a significant wall - the lowest side may be less than 10 m, but must be at least 6 m high.
