The Klingende Brücke is an amalgamation of 21 singing groups (song studios) that sing songs in original European languages . It was founded in 1949 by Josef (Sepp) Gregor in Essen and today has almost 1,000 permanent participants in Germany, Belgium and France.

In the song studios , the songs from the repertoire of all languages ​​of the peoples of Europe are first explained in detail, if possible by native speakers, and then practiced and sung. They are mostly beautiful old folk songs.

Working with the songs of the peoples ( European folk song , German folk song ) leads to a new understanding and a new design of singing. In view of the many conflicts between cultures, it is important to research, cultivate and revive what is left behind in the traditional song. Folk songs provide a way to understand and get to the heart of people from other cultures.

In order to be able to reach even more people with this idea, the new publication series song atlas of European languages ​​of the Klingende Brücke appears . The idea is based on Johann Gottfried Herder's international collection Voices of the Nations in Songs (1807) and finds practical use today in our multicultural reality. In the song atlas, the songs are printed in the original language, as well as in a verbatim translation as possible and provided with comments, references and images of the cultural context. In the first three volumes, ten songs each are published in Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian, English, German, Russian, Polish, Greek and Turkish. In 2005 the European Commission granted financial support for the publication of a fourth volume of the song atlas. This contains songs in Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Yiddish, German, Polish, Slovak, Moravian, Czech and Hungarian languages. The book was published in November 2006.

In the meantime, CDs of Spanish and Italian songs have also appeared in the song atlases with Sepp Gregor recordings.

The Klingende Brücke archive and research center are located in the Sepp Gregor House in Bonn . More than 20,000 songs are available there, over 1,850 of which are edited and translated on song sheets. Extensive background material, non-fiction and song books, sound samples of the language and melody of the respective songs are available to visitors and the song studios and enable linguistically, musically and factually sound work.
