history
Coverage was widespread in Germany in the 1960s / 70s. In addition to the aesthetic aspect, covering the toilet paper also served to ensure its cleanliness, stability and prevent unwanted paper unrolling. The toilet paper hats, which were often self-crocheted, were part of the “traditional symbolic cosmos of the trivial scheme in Germany” - like “the roaring deer ” or “the embroidered sofa cushion”.
For a time frowned upon as the “epitome of bourgeoisie”, the cover is now in demand again as a “cult” vehicle accessory by younger drivers and owners of vintage cars . It serves less for the original use than for the individualization of your own vehicle. According to a non-representative online survey in 2013, 58 percent of those surveyed (66% of women, 49% of men) do not like the toilet paper hat. Of 500 Austrians surveyed, 59% (women: 70%) did not like the roll of toilet paper on the hat shelf. The toilet paper roll was voted the “most terrible car accessory”.
