The Culross Abbey ( en : Culross Abbey ) is a former Cistercian monastery in Scotland . It's in Culross in Fife .

history

The monastery was founded in 1217 by Maol Choluim (I), Earl of Fife . Culross Monastery was a subsidiary of Kinloss Monastery , a daughter of Melrose Monastery , which in turn was a subsidiary of Clairvaux Primary Abbey . Culross was the 573rd medieval Cistercian monastic abbey. The abbey was withdrawn in 1589. The facility is looked after by Historic Scotland .

Buildings and plant

The layout of the 13th century essentially corresponded to what was customary in the order. In the late 15th century, the church's conversion area and nave were abandoned. In 1633 the choir became a parish church, while the adjoining buildings fell into disrepair. The north transept was turned into a burial place for Sir George Bruce in 1642. The abbey was restored in 1823 and 1905.
