The Frauenkappelen Monastery is a former Augustinian monastery in Frauenkappelen , Canton of Bern , Switzerland .

Around 1100 there was a chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary on the site of today's parish church . Between 1228 and 1240 a convent was built near this chapel. The Augustinian convent of Sancta Maria de Cappellis in Foresto was small and probably never had more than 20 nuns. The east wall of the monastery church from the time it was founded has been preserved. The monastery was abolished in 1485 and the church set was assigned to the Canon Monastery in Bern. The community was initially called Cappelen im Forst (lat. Capella in foresta ). The 1521 copy of a year book with entries from the 14th to 16th centuries contains, among other things, the names of numerous nuns of the monastery. These came from the regional nobility or from the notable families of Bern. The von Bubenberg family , who owned the nearby Alt-Bubenberg Castle until the 14th century , made a noticeable number of foundations .

The name in use today, Frauenkappelen, which refers to the Marien patronage , did not come into use until the early modern period.
