The Georgenberg Monastery is a former Premonstratensian monastery in Bad Rodach in Bavaria in the Bamberg diocese.

history

Around the year 1120, two Countess Palatine, Agnes (widow of the Saxon Count Palatine Friedrich von Bottendorf) and her sister Adelheid von Horburg, together with other properties in Bad Rodach, also donated the nearby Georgenberg to the Diocese of Bamberg. The Bishop Otto the Saint of Bamberg planned the establishment of a Benedictine propsty.

In 1135 the bishop donated this "Rothaha cell" to the Veßra monastery as a support . In 1149, Bishop Wigger of Brandenburg consecrated the chapel built on the Georgenberg in honor of St. George . The monastery remained a relatively insignificant branch of the mother monastery during its existence. Since the 14th century, only a single priest from the mother monastery in Veßra has provided the chapel with the title of provost.

After secularization as part of the Reformation , Elector Johann Friedrich I the Magnanimous of Saxony donated the entire property of the provost's office to Captain Matthes von Wallenrod in 1540 . In 1542 the town of Rodach bought the former provost for 4,000 guilders. The buildings were demolished around 1550 and the stones were used to reinforce the city wall. Only parts of the foundation walls of the monastery in the eastern part of the mountain plateau remained.
