A document from Emperor Ludwig the Pious from 823 is the only evidence that there was a Benedictine monastery in Gunzenhausen: With this document, the Emperor transferred the “Gunzinhusir Monastery” on the Altmühl in the Gau Sualafeld to the abbot Sindold of the Reich monastery Ellwangen ; In the following period, the Abbots of Ellwangen gave Gunzenhausen as a fief to noble families.
