The Marcilly Monastery (Marciliacum) is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Provency in the Yonne department , Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region , in France , around nine kilometers north of Avallon .
history
Buret de Prey, Lord of Marcilly, and his wife Marie d'Anglure founded the Cistercian nuns' abbey Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Repos in 1239, which became a pilgrimage destination for the area. The monastery community dissolved around 1460 and it was followed by monks who came from Fontenay Monastery , a daughter monastery of Clairvaux . The monastery suffered damage in the Hundred Years War and the Wars of Religion. It came to an end in the French Revolution .
Buildings and plant
The church was demolished after 1790. The abbot's house has been preserved, which after reconstruction resembles a castle from the 15th century. The vaulted refectory has also been preserved in it. The pigeon house and the fountain are still in the park.
