San Isidoro del Campo Monastery (1301 - 1431)

The Monastery of San Pedro de Gumiel (Sanctus Petrus) is a former Cistercian abbey that has since disappeared in the municipality of Gumiel de Izán in the province of Burgos in Castile-León in Spain , 12 km from Aranda de Duero and 68 km from Burgos.

history

The monastery was founded in 1194 (according to other sources as early as 1189) as a subsidiary of the Morimond primary abbey . An abbot of San Pedro de Gumiel is said to have been mentioned as early as 1100 (main article Cogolludo ). In 1196, the co-founder of the Calatrava order , Fray Diego Velázquez, was buried in the monastery. It was dissolved in 1835 when the monastery was abolished under the government of Juan Álvarez Mendizábal .

Buildings and plant

The monastery has not been preserved. Twelve capitals from the cloister have found their way into the church of Santa María by Gumiel de Izán, which are reminiscent of models from the Abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos .
