The St. Koloman Monastery is the Provincial House of the Steyler Mission Sisters in Stockerau at Hornerstrasse 75.

history

At the point in Stockerau, where St. Koloman had executed, a chapel was first built and expanded into a church in the 15th century. In 1643 the Franciscans built a monastery, which was closed by Emperor Joseph II in 1784 . After that, the building changed hands several times.

In 1912 it was acquired by the Steyler Missionary Sisters and used again as a monastery. In the same year, work began on a new building, according to the plans of architect Bruno Buchwieser senior , which was inaugurated on November 23, 1913. From 1936 to 1937 the monastery was expanded again with Buchwieser to include a north wing and a new monastery church was built, and in 1978 a four-story extension was added to the south.

As part of a monastery tower, the National Socialists expropriated the sisters in 1940 and used the house as a resettlement camp and the headquarters of the Gauleitung. In 1945 the Red Army set up a military hospital in the old building, and the Steyler Mission Sisters were able to use the new building as a monastery again. On August 9, 1946, the entire monastery was returned to the order.
