history

The monastery was built in 1182 by Fray Martin de Vega for the Benedictine order. The community joined the Cistercian order in 1203 as a daughter monastery of Carracedo Monastery and thus belonged to the filiation of Cîteaux Monastery . In the monastery suspension ( disentailment ) under the government of Juan Álvarez Mendizábal the monastery in 1835, was dissolved.

Buildings and plant

The monastery, which is classified as a Monumento Nacional ( Bien de Interés Cultural ), has been rebuilt several times, the current structure is largely baroque. The eastern parts of the church with the semicircular main apse and the grave of Juan Alvarez Osorio on the north side of the church have been preserved from the original Romanesque complex.
