The Zscheiplitz Monastery - Klosterbrüder e. V. are a non-profit association registered since 1995 , which was founded in early 1985 under the name of Interest Group Klosterkirche Zscheiplitz (IGZ) by about a dozen citizens from Zscheiplitz , a district of Freyburg (Unstrut) in southern Saxony-Anhalt , with the aim of to restore decayed medieval former monastery church of the former Benedictine monastery Zscheiplitz in the village and to make it accessible again. The main restoration work was carried out by the IGZ during the GDR era.

This form of a private, non-state-controlled citizens' initiative was extremely unusual in the times of the GDR for several reasons: the establishment was not formally legitimized (no existing legal basis such as an association law ), the rebuilding of a church was not absolutely desired by the GDR state and the Citizens of Zscheiplitz organized themselves completely privately without direct support from a party or the city administration.

Nevertheless, in the course of the following months, the IGZ was tacitly recognized by the authorities responsible for monument protection and the representation of the Evangelical Church of Anhalt (a member church of the Federation of Evangelical Churches in the GDR in 1985 ) , not least due to a very clever negotiating tactic . In the spring of 1985, a "user agreement" was concluded with the church, which gave the interest group direct permission to carry out all necessary measures for the reconstruction of the monastery church on behalf of the church. The legal construction was probably unique in the GDR.

Even after the fall of the Wall in 1989, contrary to all formal legal requirements, the pan-German authorities continued to grant the interest group all responsibilities for measures to reconstruct the monastery church. This also included the acceptance and administration of all funds. In the period up to 1995, the IGZ operated in a somewhat unlawful area, as it remained without a formal association structure according to the German Civil Code (BGB) or tax law. The club's immediate goal - the reconstruction of the monastery church itself - was achieved by 1994.

In the years 1985 to 1989 the IGZ initiated an emergency safeguarding and clearing of the area from rubbish and wild growth, a renewal of the entire roof structure including the false ceiling and the roof covering of the church nave , the renovation of the church tower with the repair of the damaged wooden structure and new roofing Sheet copper so that the monastery church can be used again for church services, concerts and exhibitions . Further construction measures such as interior plastering, the construction of a wooden gallery, new electrics, the complete reconstruction of the leaded glass windows and exterior lighting that can be seen from afar were carried out by the IGZ and the association successively and largely through the personal commitment of the association members. The association was repeatedly supported by donations in cash and in kind from private individuals and local companies.

In 1995 the IGZ became a registered association with the name Kloster Zscheiplitz - Klosterbrüder e. V. , who continues to use the monastery church for concerts, for example, and to reconstruct other buildings.

In 1995 one of the Ev. Plaque donated to the parish of Freyburg and the parish of Freyburg with the names of the IGZ members who have been active since 1985. These are Rolf Oertel, Otto Brix, Lothar Brommer, Joachim Goetze (IGZ board member from 1985 to 1995), Eberhard Kestel, Frank Kraenert, Olaf Markwardt, Karl-Heinz Pretzsch, Hubert Reichert, Wolf-Dieter Seidel, Ehrhard Schaefer, Hubert Skupin and Karl-Heinz Wiegand.

The importance of the activities of the IGZ and the later association can be seen in 2011 from the fact that the World Heritage Association an Saale und Unstrut e. V. proposed that the former monastery church, which was completely restored through a purely private initiative, be put on the UNESCO World Heritage List .
