The Klosterholz Tunnel is an abandoned railway tunnel north of Gevelsberg in the Ennepe-Ruhr district . It belonged to the Elbschetalbahn from Witten to Schwelm and has a length of 350 meters. When the railway line opened on May 15, 1934, the Klosterholz tunnel was also opened to rail traffic at line kilometers 13.1 (north portal).

It was named after the Klosterholz settlement next to the tunnel (later called Klostermark, a district of Gevelsberg since 1970). Since the tunnel is located on the Asbeck corridor , it is sometimes referred to as the Asbeck tunnel .

U-shift

Towards the end of the Second World War, the Nazi state set up an aircraft repair workshop in the Klosterholz Tunnel under the cover name Goldammer (construction number 265). Armaments and production facilities were also set up in the other tunnel structures along the line. For this so-called U-relocation , the Reichsbahn completely stopped the scheduled rail traffic on the route in September 1944 and a task force from the Todt Organization then carried out reconstruction work on the tunnel. Subsequently, the Ludwig Hansen company from Münster began on January 1, 1945 with the repair of combat aircraft of the Wehrmacht. In addition to the factory workers, forced laborers from Eastern Europe were also used.

Conversion

After the Second World War, operations on the line were resumed and continued until passenger and freight traffic was discontinued. In 1983, the section between the Wengern West and Gevelsberg West stations was finally closed . The tunnel had lost its original purpose and the city of Gevelsberg then looked for a new use for the tunnel structure. The proposal arose to fill both the Klosterholz tunnel and the Silscheder tunnel with waste. However, this proposal was not followed up by the city.

At the turn of the millennium, the intention to convert the former railway line into a cycle path came to the fore. It was then decided to integrate the disused section of the Elbschetalbahn into the Von-Ruhr-zur-Ruhr cycle path under the leadership of the State Office for Road Construction NRW . In 2014, the construction work began in the first construction phase. In the third or final construction phase, which also includes the Klosterholz Tunnel, the construction site clearance began in 2018 and the tunnel renovation was put out to tender in 2020.
