Cheng Jingye

Cheng Jingye ( Chinese  成 竞 业 ; * October 1959 ) is a Chinese diplomat who has been the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to the Canberra since May 2016 .

He has a master’s degree. From 1985 to 1990 he was the third class attaché and secretary of the embassy in the Department of International Organizations and Conferences at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in Beijing. From 1990 to 1993 he was third class embassy secretary, later second class, at the permanent mission at the UN headquarters . From 1993 to 2000 he was Embassy Secretary Second Class, Deputy Head of Department, Head of Department in the Department of International Organizations and Conferences in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 2000 to 2003 he was Deputy Director General of the Arms Control Department in the Foreign Ministry. From 2003 to 2005 he was a ministerial advisor at the UN headquarters . From 2005 to 2007 he was Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary for Disarmament Issues. From 2007 to 2011 he was Director General of the Arms Control Department in the Foreign Ministry. From 2011 to 2016 he was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Representative of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna .

He is married and has a son. On February 17, 2020, called for an end to the "tough" entry ban. On April 23, 2020, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison recommended that China share the common goal of protecting the world from viruses, and rejecting Beijing's refusal to conduct an independent investigation into the causes of the coronavirus pandemic.

An investigation that focuses on China's responsibility for the global spread of the virus could have "dangerous" consequences for the Australian tourism industry and agriculture, Ambassador Cheng Jingye told The Australian Financial Review .
