Clever Gretelein

Klug Gretelein is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 462). The work was performed for the first time on April 18, 1895 in the concert hall of the Wiener Musikverein .

Remarks

The singing waltz Klug Gretelein was composed for the 25th anniversary of the building of the Vienna Musikverein (including the concert hall) and dedicated to the Society of Friends of Music . The world premiere was conducted by Eduard Strauss . The concert singer Olga Türk-Rohn took over the singing part from a sick opera singer at the last minute. A few weeks later the printed version of the work appeared, but it was clearly different from the original version. Johann Strauss gave this version the title Klug Gretelchen . The redesign to a pure orchestral version was carried out by a previously unknown artist. This version was first performed on July 11, 1895 in London, again by Eduard Strauss. The work again bore the title Klug Gretelein . On October 20, this version was played for the first time in Vienna, again in the concert hall of the Musikverein, under Edward's direction. The name of the waltz goes back to the text of the song waltz written by the librettist Alfred Maria Willner , in which a Gretchen occurs.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 6 minutes and 10 seconds. Depending on the musical conception of the conductor, this time can change by up to a minute plus or minus.
