The first mention of this dynasty comes from the first half of the 14th century when a castle was acquired in Nowy Wiśnicz . As a result, the Kmita dynasty acquired further lands and towns in what is now the Subcarpathian region and in the Bieszczady , and they founded further villages along the upper reaches of the San , so that by the end of the 16th century they were the masters of over 60 villages in the region.

The main seat of the family was the Sobień Castle in the valley of the San River from around 1389 and after its destruction by the troops of the Kingdom of Hungary in 1474, the village of Lesko . The family seat, Sobień Castle, fell into ruin during the Bar Confederation, 1768–1772 .
