Clatter (fraternities)
In student language, rattling is understood to be a humorous to openly insulting rhetorical exchange between members of student associations - preferably between those of different associations and world views. When rattling, humorous to derogatory nicknames are often used for members of certain connection types , such as “ Buxe ” for fraternity members , “Curry” for corps students , “Schlitzer” for striking connections per se or “Bible thrower” for Christian student associations . Corporates without comment knowledge , tradition or with a generally embarrassing demeanor are often referred to as "frits". The reasons for the rattling are varied, such as maintaining and demonstrating one's own rhetorical skills, demonstrating the alleged superiority of one's own association or one's own umbrella organization, or provoking a beer boy .
The term rattling was first introduced into student language in the 20th century, and since the 18th century the terms approaching , snoring , blowing , thickening or “treating en canaille” have been common for the same verbal duels . At the present time students speak of paulen or anpaulen . The word rattle can be traced back to the 17th century in connection with verbal derailments outside of the student language. Here it is derived from the Middle High German gnattern , Low German gnaddern for grumbling, grinding teeth, moaning. In Swedish there is a similar meaning to gnata (to nag), in English to gnatter (to gnaw, growl). In a Brunswick song from 1607, the word gnattern appears in the sense of groaning, nagging: "Roth Lew in his gate / drives great overmoo / pölkt, grunts, scratches and gnatters / despises the little horse good."
