Knick egg from Halstenbek

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Knick-Ei from Halstenbek in the Pinneberg district was a sports hall construction with an egg-shaped glass dome that collapsed several times during the construction phase due to static errors during the construction work and thus became known throughout Europe. Construction began in September 1995. The building was never completed and was demolished in early 2007.

Temporal overview

The sports hall was planned by André Poitiers and his architectural office Poitiers & Partner. The Stuttgart statics office Schlaich Bergermann und Partner (SBP) provided the calculations. The total costs up to 2005 were around 8.3 million euros.

Construction began in 1995. Shortly before the opening, on February 5, 1997, the metal structure of the roof collapsed. It was then rebuilt. On June 26, 1998, again shortly before the planned opening of the plant, the construction failed again. In February 2002, the Halstenbeck municipal council decided to rebuild the hall. The plan was to complete the building with a more robust glass roof in spring 2003. However, this plan was no longer implemented.

On July 18, 2005, the community decided to demolish the Knick-Ei completely and to build a sports hall in a conventional construction. Since the mayor Bruno Egge appealed against this decision because of legal concerns, the decision was withdrawn on August 15, 2005. A survey of citizens in the community came to the result on December 11, 2005 that there should be no more reconstruction. The demolition work began in January 2007. This lasted until March 2007. The site was then filled with sand.

In June 2007 negotiations began on an out-of-court settlement between the Halstenbek community and the statics office. They resulted in an agreement in September 2008, according to which the statics office's insurance company paid the municipality a compensation of 2.3 million euros.
