André Poitiers

André Poitiers (* 1959 in Hamburg ) is a German architect and urban planner . He lives and works in Hamburg.

Life

André Poitiers was born the son of a carpenter and grew up in Hamburg-Schnelsen . When he was one year old, his father died and his mother took over the family carpentry in Rellingen . After graduating from high school , Poitiers completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter and boat builder at the Asmus yacht shipyard in Glückstadt from 1979 to 1980 and trained as a banker at Hamburger Sparkasse from 1981 to 1983 . From 1983 to 1989 he studied architecture at the TU Braunschweig , a. a. with the Hamburg professor Meinhard von Gerkan . To finance his studies, he worked in construction as a carpenter and varnisher. He graduated with a diploma with distinction.

Poitiers lives with the lawyer for building and architectural law at the Hamburg law firm Osborne Clarke , Katharina Feddersen. They have had a son since mid-2015.

After completing his studies, Poitiers initially worked as an architect in Prof. Peter Schweger's office and then got a one-year job with Sir Norman Foster in London . From 1992 to 1995 he was a research assistant at the chair of Prof. Roland Ostertag in the "Institute for Building Theory and Design" at the TU Braunschweig .

In 1995 Poitiers started his own business as an architect in Hamburg and has since operated his own office in downtown Hamburg. The first big order was the sports hall in Halstenbek . The building with the egg-shaped glass dome was very popular, but gained notoriety as a " buckle " when the roof collapsed on February 5, 1997 due to errors in the statics.

In the Kontorhaus am Großen Burstah , with now 15 employees, the designs for numerous architectural and urban planning work, such as the redesign of the Jungfernstieg , the corner house at Heuberg 1, as well as the Kempertrautmann House on the Große Bleichen (with the seat of the advertising agency Thjnk and the car manufacturer Tesla ). For the chain of stores "Dat Backhus", his office implemented an overall concept with exterior and interior design for all 80 houses in Hamburg. The “Plasma House” and the “Donut House” are considered to be experimental buildings, while drafts for a residential area in Halstenbek with 110 units and a competition for an opera house in Norway are in progress . Poitiers' office also designs IT logistics for the handling of large construction projects.

In 2010 the architecture office Poitiers was awarded the contract for one of the largest urban development projects in Hamburg: the planning for the " New Center Altona ". He prevailed against nine renowned, international competitors. The urban design is the basis for later development plans. It includes the planning for a new district with u. a. 2000 apartments, green spaces and new uses of the old freight railway hangars.

Memberships

In 1996 Poitiers was appointed to the Association of German Architects (BDA), in 2000 he was appointed to the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and since 2000 he has also been a member of the “First European Architects Forum” in Venice . In the same year, he was registered as an urban planner in the Hamburg Chamber of Architects .

He was a member of the board of the “Lebendige Stadt” foundation , where Poitiers is now listed as a member of the committee.
