history

Hans Haupt from Solingen invented the collapsible umbrella in 1928. This was patented on November 23, 1934 . Series production of what would later become the most famous German umbrella brand was taken over by Fritz Bremshey in 1932. The Knirps was the first umbrella with a telescopic frame.

The company Bremshey & Co believed in the success of this product and realized the first copies of the new pocket umbrella frame in its production facility. The steadily increasing sales figures as well as the company's marketing-oriented attitude, which was unusual for the time, laid the foundation for the Knirps brand and revolutionized the entire umbrella industry.

After the collapse of Bremshey AG in Solingen and the phasing out of production, the umbrella area was taken over by the company Kortenbach & Rauh in Solingen in August 1982 together with the brand name "Knirps International". Production in Germany was stopped in 1999. Four years later, in 2003, the Knirps License Corporation GmbH & Co. KG was founded in Solingen with the business goal of international licensing of the Knirps brand. In October 2005 the companies doppler & Co. GmbH (Austria) and Strotz AG (Switzerland) took over the Knirps brand.

Knirps International GmbH now focuses exclusively on licensing the Knirps brand and on product development worldwide.

Knirps has been a registered and protected brand for collapsible umbrellas with telescopic frames worldwide since 1928.
