Knockdhu is a whiskey - distillery at Knock, near Huntly Aberdeenshire in Scotland , United Kingdom . The distillery is currently owned by Inverhouse Distillers Ltd.

General

An Cnoc ( marketing pronunciation : annok ) is Gaelic [ən̪ˠ ˈkɾɔ̃xg] and means “the hill” . The unusual thing about this whiskey from the Eastern Highlands (on the border with Speyside ) is that it does not bear the name of his distillery, which is otherwise a natural tradition for Scottish whiskey distilleries. This was still the case until the early 1990s, but since 1993 the Knockdhu distillery's single malt has been bottled under the name An Cnoc , allegedly because of an agreement with the owners of the Knockando distillery to prevent confusion with their own malt wanted to. Knockdhu, on the other hand, means something like "black mountain", which is probably derived from the 400-meter-high Knock Hill , which is not far from the distillery near the village of Knock.

history

The distillery was founded in 1892 by John Morrison. After suitable sources were discovered in the Knock Hills in 1893, Knockdhu went into production in 1894. In 1898 additional warehouses were built because of the whiskey boom at the time. The distillery was closed for some time in the 1930s and 1980s; During the Second World War and the associated grain rationing, there was also no production. In 1960 a tractor replaced the distillery horse. In 1988 Inverhouse Distillers acquired the distillery, which at that time had been closed for 5 years. In 1990 the first whiskey was bottled as a single malt (still under the name Knockdhu); until then, Knockdhu whiskey was a popular ingredient in blends . Since 1993 the single malt has been marketed by Knockdhu as An Cnoc .

production

The current owners are Inverhouse Destillers Ltd. The annual production amounts to 992,000 liters of whiskey (with 70% alcohol content). The single malt, which is bottled for 12, 16 and 21 years, is very fresh and has a slightly sweet taste.
