The Knockmaa (or Knockma , Irish Cnoc Meá , older spelling Cnoc Meadha ) is a hill rising suddenly from the plain in the north of County Galway on the east side of Lough Corrib in the Republic of Ireland . Knockmaa means Maedb's hill . Tradition has it that the Queen of Connacht is buried under one of the four cairns on the summit. However, according to another legend, this hill is the Cul Cessrach , under which Cessair lies. The second cairn tomb is said to be the entrance to the Otherworld Seat of Finvarra (Finnbherra), the fairy king of Connacht, according to legend. Maedb's tomb is usually associated with the cairn at Knocknarea near Sligo .

The ruins of Old Castle Hackett, built in the 13th century and destroyed in 1705, are built by the Kirwans , a family of the Galway tribes . The ruin is popularly called Finvarras Castle . On the southeast side of the Knockmaa is a ring fort with three underground chambers called Gaillech Cave (cave of the Caillech).
