Way of life
Growling guramis inhabit small pools, swamps, rice fields and ditches with warm water, densely overgrown with herbaceous plants, and feed on zooplankton, small crustaceans and insect larvae. Like many labyrinth fish, the growling gourami builds a foam nest for reproduction . It is only small and is supported by dense aquatic plants deep below the surface of the water. The female lays up to 600 eggs that sink to the ground, which the female, sometimes also the male, collects and spits into the nest. The fry hatch after about 24 hours.
