description

The growling gourami is a maximum of 7 cm long, but usually remains much smaller. His body is elongated and heavily flattened on the sides. The unpaired fins are long and often have a few elongated fin rays . The anal fin can extend with its elongated fin rays to the end of the caudal fin. The basic color is yellowish to brownish, with the back darker and the belly yellowish white. Depending on the lighting conditions, the sides can shimmer bluish white. There are 2 to 4 dark brown longitudinal bands on the sides of the body. Two start at the back of the eye. The fins are reddish to purple or bluish and patterned with red and green dots.

Way of life

Growling guramis inhabit small pools, swamps, rice fields and ditches with warm water, densely overgrown with herbaceous plants, and feed on zooplankton, small crustaceans and insect larvae. Like many labyrinth fish, the growling gourami builds a foam nest for reproduction . It is only small and is supported by dense aquatic plants deep below the surface of the water. The female lays up to 600 eggs that sink to the ground, which the female, sometimes also the male, collects and spits into the nest. The fry hatch after about 24 hours.
