Antoine Christophe Agbepa Mumba (* 13. August 1956 in Kisangani ), also known as Koffi Olomide , is a Congolese soukous - singer , songwriter and music producer . He is the founder and head of the "Quartier Latin International" group.

Life

Olomide was born to a Congolese father and a mother from Sierra Leone. He grew up in a residential area of ​​the capital Kinshasa, where he came into contact with the "rumba congolaise". Their major representatives at this time are u. a. Franco, Grand Kallé, Vicky Longomba and Tabu Ley Rochereau, who impressed him most of all.

He made his first appearance as a musician during his studies in business administration, which he completed in Paris. In 1978 he made his first recordings while on vacation in Kinshasa . The singles Onia, Asso and Princesse Ya Senza emerged , the latter of which was a success.

At 22 he became a songwriter for Papa Wemba . At the same time, Olomide successfully completed his studies in 1980. After an unsuccessful attempt to find work in the crisis-ridden homeland, Olomide returns to Europe.

In 1983 he released his first CD Ngounda . Three years later, Olomide was head of the Quartier Latin group , which later became world famous. In 1994 he was voted best singer ( Africa Music Awards ) and won the award for best clip (album V12 ). In Europe too, Olomidé filled the halls, e.g. B. the Zenith in Paris.

Olomidé is the king of Tschatcho , a musical genre that he created himself and that focuses on women and love. Today's "coffiphiles" like to portray themselves as affectionate lovers.

Olomide can boast numerous gold records and many awards, such as B. 2002 four trophies at the Kora Awards and 2005 the Kora Award as "Artist of the Decade". He is the most successful Congolese musician and is particularly successful throughout Africa and Europe.

Olomide is married and has a total of eight children.
