The coal crusher Kohlgrube is part of the historical lignite overhead systems of the former Wolfsegg-Traunthaler Kohlenwerk AG (WTK AG) and is located in the Upper Austrian Wolfsegg , district Kohlgrube . Today it houses the Kohlgrube cultural area .

Industrial history

The coal crushing and sorting plant was built in 1922/23 by the architect Wiechels (Steyr), after the mining industry was shut down in the 1960s, it was left to decay and finally burned out in 1968.

What was left was an imposing reinforced concrete structure known as the Kohlgrube coal mine .

In 2001 the crusher was saved from demolition through private initiative (Peter Weinhäupl and Wolfgang Weinhäupl) by acquiring the area and repaired it for cultural use. From 2003 to 2010, the club operated Kohlgrube.at the art room coal mine .

In 2003 the area served as the opening location of the Festival of Regions , one of Austria's contemporary Landart cultural festivals. Since 2005, theater has been performed in the area. The initiator of the performances is the Theater Hausruck association . The coal crusher served as an impressive backdrop for the Franzobel premieres of Hunt - or the total February (2005/06) and Zipf - or the dark side of the moon (2007/08) . After the theater moved out in 2009, the area around the coal breaker will be converted for future cultural purposes.
