Koko Dembélé

Koko Dembélé (* 1954 in Mopti ) is a former Malian singer and guitarist who played reggae with influences from traditional Malian music.

biography

Dembélé comes from a griot family . He grew up in Mopti, 650 km northeast of Bamako , but also accompanied his father on his travels. From 1976 to 1986 he played guitar in the band Orchester Kanaga from his hometown Mopti. With this he also appeared at festivals in Senegal and France .

In 1993 Dembélé released his first solo album, Baguinée . At that time he lived in the former Ivorian capital Abidjan , which is still considered the center of West African reggae today. Three more albums followed. Today Dembélé lives in Bamako.

Besides Oumar Koita , Dembélé is the only Malian reggae artist who has had international success. His albums sold particularly well in Brazil . Dembélé also appeared there several times, and he also completed a European tour, which also included appearances in Germany and Switzerland . His album Amagni was released for the international market by the London-based Sterns Music label .
