Koko Warner
Koko Warner is an American environmental scientist at the interface of climate change and migration . She is head of the “Climate Impacts, Vulnerability and Risks” division of the program for environmental and climate adaptation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Life
From 2003 to 2006, Warner was a research assistant at the Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research . From 2006 to 2016 she headed the Department of Environmental Migration , Social Vulnerability and Adaptation at the Institute for Environmental and Human Security at the United Nations University .
Act
Warner's research deals with risk management strategies for environmental and climate adaptation; in particular, she examines methods of identifying and measuring environmental migration and the ability of societies, economies and the environment to cope with natural disasters . Warner's research shows that the climate crisis will lead to migratory movements. So she emphasized:
“Changing weather, floods and droughts are increasingly threatening people's safety and livelihoods in many places. As a result, many families have to consider whether they can stay where they are or try to live elsewhere. "
She also expresses herself publicly about her very personal concern about the climate crisis. As she once said: “I lost a lot of sleep over what science says. For me as a person, it's pretty scary. We need to act urgently. ” She also deals with climate insurance .
Warner is one of the authors of the Fifth Assessment Report of the IPCC IPCC (IPCC), and further it is a board member of the Munich Climate Insurance Initiative (MCII).
In 2014, the International Science Council named her in its list of “20 women who attract attention in the climate debate” and described her as a globally recognized authority on climate change and migration.
