The comedy Basel was from 1950 to 1968 a separate chamber drama theater in Basel , Switzerland , with a solid ensemble and own productions.

history

The Comedy Basel was founded in 1950 by Egon Karter as a stock corporation . The architect H. Meyer converted the property at Steinenvorstadt 63 into a theater with a peep box stage and an orchestra pit . The house initially had a capacity of 270 seats, which was expanded to 380 seats four years later with the addition of a balcony. In addition, the general infrastructure was improved with a tied floor and a revolving platform . Another increase in capacity took place in 1961 when the new building with 600 seats and a five times larger stage was inaugurated. In the following year, the comedy workshop with fifty seats was added in the painter's hall.

In 1968/1969 the comedy and the city theater merged . The Basler Theater, as it has been called since then, was directed by Werner Düggelin . The name «Theater Basel» was introduced later. In 2001 the old house of the former comedy, which was no longer technically sufficient, was closed. In 2002 the new theater was opened at Steinentorstrasse 7.
