The Committee for the Prevention of Torture (Russian Комитет по предотвращению пыток , English Committee for the Prevention of Torture ) is a non-governmental organization in Nizhny Novgorod , Russia , which works for victims of torture .

The Committee for the Prevention of Torture works to help victims of institutional ill-treatment and torture in prisons, penal camps, police stations and elsewhere.

It tries to

  • Detection and documentation of torture
  • Medical, psychological and other help for victims of torture
  • Legal representation before national and international courts

In addition to the head office, the committee maintains an office in Orenburg and regional organizations in Chechnya , Mari El and Bashkortostan . It is a member of the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims .

history

Committee Against Torture

In 2000 the Committee against Torture ( Комитет против пыток , Committee against Torture ) was established in Nizhny Novgorod . The most important task in the early years was to work in Chechnya and other republics in the Caucasus.

2011 was a Mobile Task Force ( Mobile Joint Group ) was formed consisting of lawyers and other specialists. This has been honored with several international awards.

In early 2015, the committee was registered with the Ministry of Justice as an "organization acting as a foreign agent ". It officially disbanded on August 1, 2015.

Committee for the Prevention of Torture

The Torture Prevention Committee was established in their place . On January 14, 2016, this was also registered as a "foreign agent". The organization stated that it had not received any funds from abroad. This is a requirement for such a registration. The Ministry of Justice stated that although the donors for the committee were all from Russia, they themselves received financial support from abroad.
