Komod Pacific

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Komod Pazik († September 8, 1878 ) was a chief of the indigenous Sakizaya in Takubuwan and in 1878 the leader of the Sakizaya in the so-called Takobowan battle (or Takubuwan battle; in the Sakizaya language: Takubuwa a kawaw ; in Kavalan: Lanas na Kabalaen ; Chinese: 加 禮 宛 戰役). After the battle, he and his wife, Icep Kanasaw, were killed by the Qing Army using the Lingchi torture method .

Komod Pacific was called Lalebuhan (火神, god of fire) by the later generations of Sakizaya . The fire cult of the Sakizaya Palamal , today's greatest ritual of the Sakizaya, is supposed to mourn its victim.

Hierarchy of the Sakizaya

During the Qing reign, the Sakizaya lived mainly in Takubuwan, which was recorded on 竹 窩 灣 by the Qing administrators. They slowly divided into six main tribes including the Nabakowan , Cipawkan , Tamasaydan , Towapon , Pacific and the Takubuwan base location due to the increasing population and subsequent agricultural needs . Each tribe has its own hierarchy , which consisted of men and was determined by an age ranking (年齡 階級). The chiefs met in the joint leaders' meeting (長老 會議) and played a political role within the Sakizaya society. Komod Pazik was then chief chief and the chief of the Takubuwann tribe.

Takobowan battle 1878

The "Takobowan Skirmish" deals with the armed conflicts between the Sakizaya and the Kavalan and Qing troops allied with them. This event ended with many Kavalan and Sakizaya being killed. After the lost battle, the leaders' meeting considered and decided that Komod Pazik and his wife Icep Kanasaw should surrender to the enemy troops. He was eventually killed by the Qing Army using the Lingchi torture method on a Gadang tree near what is now Tzuchi Hualien Hospital. His wife, Icep Kanasaw, was laid on one of the open logs, the second half of which was laid over it, on which the soldiers jumped. Icep Kanasaw was killed in front of Pazik's eyes. It was a public execution that began at 9 a.m. and lasted until sunset. The Yanks and other groups were ordered to watch the killing.

The Takobowan Skirmish and the Komod Pazik sacrifice were the turning point for the Sakizaya. They were told by the Führer meeting to join the Yanks so the group could survive. Since then, the Sakizaya have been hiding among the Americans for 129 years.

Palamal, the fire cult of the Sakizaya

Palamal on October 7, 2017

Since 2008 the Sakizayas have been holding the largest ritual Palamal , the fire cult of the Sakizaya, to reconstruct the scene of the fire attacks by the Qing troops and to show respect to Kumud Pazik as Lalebuhan (火神, god of fire), his wife and other fighters of the Sakizaya .
