Komodo is a chess engine developed by Don Dailey and Mark Lefler , while Grandmaster Larry Kaufman was in charge of the scoring function. Komodo is addressed via the open UCI protocol , which is supported by all modern user interfaces. The current version is a commercial engine, but earlier versions (currently up to version 11) are free for non-commercial use. Since 2014, Komodo has regularly topped the current rankings with new versions and fought a duel with Houdini and the free engine Stockfish .

From the 22nd  World Computer Chess Championship (WCCC) in 2016 to the 25th WCCC 2019, Komodo won the title of computer chess world champion and its developers won the Shannon Trophy (see photo under web links ).

history

Komodo was derived from Don Dailey's earlier engine, however , in January 2010 . The first version with multiprocessor support was released in June 2013 as Komodo 5.1 MP . For this version, essential parts of the program have been rewritten and ported to C ++ 11 . A single processor version of Komodo, which won the CCT15 tournament in February of that year, was released just before the Komodo 5.1 MP release. This version, called Komodo CCT , was still based on the old C code and was about 30 Elo points stronger than the new multiprocessor version, the revision of which was not yet completed.

With the appearance of Komodo 6 on October 4, 2013, Don Dailey announced that he had an acute form of leukemia . He declared that his health was no longer able to contribute to the development of Komodo. Four days later, Dailey announced that Mark Lefler would join the Komodo team and continue work on the program. On May 24, 2018, Chess.com announced the acquisition of Komodo. Since version 12, a separate MCTS engine has been integrated that uses Monte Carlo simulations to calculate trains. The current version Komodo 14 was released on May 12, 2020.
