Kompania Węglowa SA was a Polish coal company with headquarters in Katowice . It employed 62,800 people in 16 mines and five companies. He was able to mine 53 million tons of coal annually. The daily output was 193,000 tons of coal (as of January 2008). According to the company, it was the largest mining company in Europe. It was in the hands of the state. and was divided into four support centers.

Unions

At KW there were 177 unions, for whose maintenance the employer has to spend 20 million zloty or 6 million euros annually. The largest of these belongs to the trade union federation NSZZ Solidarność . 25.5% of the workforce or 16,100 people are members of the union.

Current

Since December 2007, a strike committee made up of 11 unions has been fighting for higher wages (6.9% more in December 2007, 14% more from January 2008). A day of strike resulted in a loss of 43 million zlotys for the group. The group plans to invest 6.5 billion zlotys by 2015.

After lengthy negotiations between business, politics and trade unions, the decision was made to dissolve the group on May 1, 2016, and to have Polska Grupa Górnicza take its place . This has taken over 11 of the original 16 mines; the others were partly transferred to Węglokoks SA ( KWK Bobrek and KWK Piekary ) in Katowice, and partly shut down by Spółka Restructureyzacji Kopalń SA ( KWK Centrum and KWK Brzeszcze). However, KWK Brzeszcze will continue to operate after a takeover on August 19, 2015 by the energy company Tauron Polska Energia .
