The Competence Center Digitalization ( KCD ), which will be the Competence Center Electronic Fare Management (KCEFM) until 2018 , is an institution of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). It was established at the end of 2002 at the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) in Gelsenkirchen and has the task of supporting the transport companies and transport associations in North Rhine-Westphalia with the introduction and further development of electronic fare management systems (EFM). This is done primarily through advice and project management. The KCD works together with Division IV A 1 in the department “Fundamental Mobility, Digitization and Networking” in the NRW Ministry of Transport.

Together, the potential of digitization should be used for new mobility concepts in order to create networked solutions and offers for the people in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The KCD:

  • supports transport companies and transport associations in NRW in the introduction and further development of electronic fare management systems based on the eTicket Germany standard
  • networks EFM technologies, eTarif, information and data quality
  • coordinates the public transport digitization offensive NRW
  • integrates topics of the VDV regional group and the future network mobility into the public transport digitization offensive NRW
  • operates and develops the “Smart Number” for buses and trains
  • coordinates, looks after and develops the information portal "The talking timetable NRW"

The KCD is a merger of the two former Competence Centers Electronic Fare Management (KCEFM), which has been part of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein Ruhr (VRR) in Gelsenkirchen since the end of 2002, and Passenger Information (KCF), which is based at the Westfälische Verkehrsgesellschaft (WVG) in Münster.

The head of the KCD is Maximilian Müller.

The KCD is one of four competence centers (KC) in NRW. KC Marketing (started in 2002) is part of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS) in Cologne. The KC Integral Timetable (2008) was set up at the local transport association Westphalia-Lippe , Bielefeld. The Rhein-Ruhr transport association also has the KC Sicherheit (2008).
