The Competence Center Women in Science and Research (CEWS) is the national hub for realizing equal opportunities for women and men in science and research in Germany. The CEWS acts as a think tank for this policy area. The priority activities include initiating change processes as well as accompanying them scientifically. The resulting exchange processes between science and politics are actively shaped by the CEWS. The field of activity is international, in particular with regard to project work and networking of best practice measures for gender equality at EU level. Organizationally, the CEWS is part of GESIS - Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences .

history

The CEWS was founded on September 29, 2000 as an externally funded project of the University of Bonn on the initiative of the Federal Government in coordination with the Federal Conference of Women's Representatives. The research center was set up for five years with 100% funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research . In order to continue the successful work, the Federal-State Commission for Educational Planning and Research Funding (BLK) decided in 2005 to integrate the CEWS into GESIS - Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences from 2006. As a division of GESIS, the tasks remained unchanged.

Target groups

In addition to political committees that seek advice, scientific organizations, universities and research institutions benefit from CEWS expertise with regard to analyzes of the causes of the marginalization of women scientists and the formulation of the resulting recommendations for action. The media continuously use the comprehensive information offered by the CEWS to support current reporting.

The Competence Center Women in Science and Research primarily offers up-to-date, statistic-based and user-friendly information, networking and career advancement services as well as databases for literature research or for the synoptic preparation of science-related equality law.
