The Konak ( Greek Κονάκι Konaki or Διοικητήριο Θεσσαλονίκης Diikitirio Thessalonikis ) is an administrative building in Thessaloniki .

history

In the place of the building there was a late Roman imperial palace. This was still in ruins when the building was erected in its place. It was built between the years 1891 and 1892 as the new Konak by the Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli on behalf of Sultan Abdülhamid II . The architecture of the building follows eclecticism .

When adding a storey, the playful eclectic roof was replaced by a neoclassical one with a hipped roof, making the building look stricter.

use

The building was planned and used as a Konak. From 1907 it also housed an Ottoman law school. In 1911 the Konak served as a hostel for the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed V. After the Ottoman army was defeated in the Balkan Wars , the surrender was signed in the Konak.

The Konak became the property of the Greek state, which used it between 1912 and 1929 as the general administration for Macedonia , and later, until its abolition, as the official seat of the Greek Ministry for Macedonia and Thrace.

Since the administrative reform in 2010 , the general secretary of the decentralized authority for Macedonia and Thrace has resided in the building.
