The Konfederacja Polski Niepodległej ( KPN , German Confederation of Independent Poland ) is a party in Poland .

The KPN was founded in 1979, still in the People's Republic of Poland , as an opposition group. In contrast to the ruling communist party PVAP , the KPN called for the independence of Poland and invoked the values that were represented in the Second Republic by Józef Piłsudski .

After martial law was imposed in 1981 , the leadership of the KPN was sentenced to several years in prison. Because of its uncompromising opposition to the PZPR, KPN did not take part in the 1989 round table talks . In 1990 the previously illegal KPN was officially registered as a party.

Even after Poland was transformed into a parliamentary democracy , KPN remained in its opposition role for a short period of time.

In 1991 the KPN temporarily supported the conservative Prime Minister Jan Olszewski .

In 1990, their party leader Leszek Moczulski took part in the presidential elections and achieved 2.5% of the vote in the first ballot .

In 1996 the KPN joined Akcja Wyborcza Solidarność (AWS), but the greater part of the KPN left the electoral alliance soon afterwards. Other KPN members under the leadership of Adam Słomka remained in the AWS under the new name KPN-OP (Polish: Obóz Patriotyczny - German: Patriotisches Lager ), later KPN Ojczyzna ( KPN Vaterland ). The KPN was now politically close to the Ruch Odbudowy Polski , but increasingly lost its importance.
