Kōno Bairei ( Japanese 幸 野 楳 嶺 , actually Yasuda Naoto ( 安 田 直 豊 ); * April 20, 1844 in Kyōto ; † February 2, 1895 ibid) was a Japanese painter in the style of the 19th century.

Work and life

Bairei became a student of the painter from the Maruyama School Nakajima Raishō at the age of eight , then at twenty-seven students of the painter from the Shijō School , Shiokawa Bunrin. He trained in the style of the Nanga school with Nakanishi Kōseki and Maeda Chōdō. Together with Gennyo, the abbot of Higashi Hongan-ji , he traveled through Kyushu and central Japan, making many drawings.

In 1878, Bairei began preparations for an art school, which opened as the Kyoto Prefecture School of Painting in 1880. He left this school in 1881 and taught his students in his studio until 1891. In 1893 he became a member of the art committee of the imperial household. In 1894 he was commissioned to paint rooms in Higashi Hongan-ji.

Bairei was a leading figure in Kyoto's art community, where he organized and promoted artistic activities. He was particularly important in his educational work. His many students include Takeuchi Seihō , Kikuchi Hōbun , and Kawai Gyokudō . His own work, which is often characterized by strong brushstrokes, shows traditional charm and sensitivity. His flowers and birds ( Kachō-ga ) and landscapes show a touch of Western realism. Bairei is also known for spontaneous sketches for woodblock prints.
