Takeuchi Seihō ( Japanese 竹 内 栖鳳 ; * December 20, 1864 in Kyōto ; † August 23, 1942 ) was a Japanese painter who shaped the Nihonga direction in Kyoto.

life and work

Takeuchi was born as Tsunekichi ( 恒 吉 ) in Kyoto. At the age of fourteen he began to study under Tsuchida Eirin , from 1881 he continued his education under the painter of the Shijō school Kōno Bairei ( 幸 野 楳 玲 ; 1844–1895). From 1883 he worked at the Kyōto Prefecture Art School ( 京都 府 画 学校 , Kyōto-fu gagakkō ), began to exhibit and received initial recognition. He won two silver cups for his picture "Spring in an abandoned garden" ( 廃 園 春色 , haien shunshoku ) at the second exhibition (1887) of the Japan Painting Society ( 日本 絵 画 協会 , Nihon kaiga kyōkai ) and for "The twelve months" ( 十二 カ 月 , jūnikagetsu ) at the exhibition (1899). In the same year he was also a teacher at the Municipal Art School in Kyōto ( Kyōto-shi Bijutsu Gakkō ). At this time he painted in the style of the Maruyama Shijō school with references to the Yamato-e and Chinese painting.

In 1900, Takeuchi visited France, where he won a prize at the Paris exhibition. After visiting other countries in Europe, he returned to Japan at the end of the year. He admired Turner and Corot and adopted elements from their painting. At this time he changed the first character of his first name as an artist from to : the pronunciation remained the same, but now the West ( 西 ) was included. In 1901 he won first prize for his painting "Lion" ( 大 獅子 図 , Daishishi-zu ) at the exhibition of the Society for New and Old Art ( 新 古 美術 会 , Shinkobijutsu-kai ) and for his painting "Autumn in the old capital "( 古都 の 秋 , Koto no aki ) at the Inten exhibition in 1902.

In 1907, when the Ministry of Culture began to hold annual art exhibitions under the abbreviation Bunten , Takeuchi became a member of the jury and took care of the Kyōto direction of Nihonga, which developed more freely than the Tōkyō direction under the strict direction of Okakura Kakuzōs . He himself showed pictures like in 1908 the pair of screens “Enlightening Rain” ( 雨 霽 , Usei ), and also in 1908 “Monkeys and rabbits in the stable” ( 飼 わ れ た る 猿 と 兎 , Kawaretaru saru to usagi ), 1909 “Thunderstorms” ( ア レ 夕 立 に , Are jūdachi ni ) and in 1913 “Beginning of a picture” ( 絵 に な る 最初 , E ni naru saisho ).

In 1909, Takeuchi began to teach at the Kyōto Municipal Art School ( 京都 市立 絵 画 専 門 学校 , Kyōto shiritsu kaiga semmon gakkō ); In 1919 he was accepted into the Academy of Arts . In 1937 he was one of the first to receive the newly created Order of Culture .

Takeuchi was in an exhibition of works by Japanese painters of the Nihonga direction, which took place from January 17 to February 28, 1931 in the Prussian Academy of the Arts , Berlin, represented with two pictures (including Chiyodajō ).

His students include Nishiyama Suishō , Tsuchida Bakusen , Nishiura Goun , Uemura Shōen , Tokuoka Shinsen and others.
