Uemura Shōen ( Japanese 上 村 松園 , actually Uemura Tsuneko (上 村 常 子); born April 23, 1875 in Kyoto ; † August 27, 1949 ) was one of the first nationally and internationally known Japanese painters .

life and work

Ms. Uemura attended the Kyōto Prefecture Art School (京都 府 画 学校, Kyōto-fu ga gakkō) from 1888 and became a student of Suzuki Shōnen (鈴木 松 年; 1848-1918), from whom she obviously received her stage name Shōen. From 1893 she studied under Kōno Bairei and after his death in 1895 under Takeuchi Seihō .

In 1890 Uemura won a prize for her painting "Beautiful Women in the Four Seasons" (四季 美人 図, Shiki bijin-zu), which she had submitted to the 3rd Domestic Industry Exhibition (内 国 勧 業 博 覧 会, Kokunai kangyō hakurankai). Then she received further prizes at fairs and exhibitions of the "Japanese Society for Art" (日本 美術 協会 Nihon Bijutsu Kyōkai), the "Japanese Society for Painting" (日本 絵 画 協会, Nihon Kaiga Kyōkai), the "Kyoto exhibition for new and old Art “(京都 新 古 美術品 展, Kyōto Shin-Kobijtsu-hin Ten), the joint exhibition of the Japanese Society for Painting and the Nihon Bijutsuin and other organizations. Uemura also exhibited abroad.

At the first exhibition of the Ministry of Culture, the "Mombushō Bijtusu Tenrankai" (文部省 美術展 覧 会) in 1907, she showed the picture "Long Night" (長夜, Chōya) and was also seen fairly regularly at the following exhibitions. In 1916 her "Lunar Eclipse in the Evening" (月食 の よ い, Gesshoku no yoi) won special attention. Recognized as an expert in designing pictures of beautiful women, she had access to the upper class of Kyōto society. These paintings show the special feminine elegance of this class.

In 1941 she became a member of the Imperial Academy of Arts (Teikoku Geijutsu-in, 帝国 芸 術 院) and in 1944 she was appointed artist at the court (帝室 芸 妓 員, Teishitsu gikei-in). In 1947 she was the first Japanese woman to receive the Order of Culture .
