Tokuoka Shinsen

Tokuoka Shinsen ( Japanese 徳 岡 神泉 ; born February 14, 1896 in Kyōto ; died June 9, 1972 ) was a Japanese painter in the Nihonga style of the Shōwa period .

life and work

Tokuoka Tokijirō ( 徳 岡 時 次郎 ) was born near the Shinsen-en ( 神泉 苑 ) park in northern Kyoto: Shinsen later became his stage name. In 1909, on the mediation of Tsuchida Bakusen, he began studying painting under Takeuchi Seihō at his private school. In 1910 he switched to the city's arts and crafts school ( 京都 市立 美術 工 芸 学校 , Kyōto shiritsu bijutsu kōgei gakkō ), stood out for good work, and in 1914 he switched to the city conservatory for painting ( 京都 市立 絵 画 専 門 学校 , Kyōto shiritsu kaiga ) made semmon graduated there in 1917. Since his pictures were not accepted for exhibitions, he left Kyoto and lived secluded at the foot of Mount Fuji until he returned to Kyoto in 1923.

At the 6th state art exhibition in Teiten in 1925, a picture of him was finally shown. His pictures "Lotos-Teich" ( 蓮池 , Hasu-ike ) and "Karpfen" ( , Koi ), submitted on the 7th and 10th pages , were then given special honors. Tokuoka was later appointed regularly as a jury member for the Teiten.

After 1945 Tokuoaka exhibited at the exhibitions of the successor to Teiten, now known as Nitten. For his new "carp" shown at the 6th exhibition in 1950, he received the Academy of Arts Prize . His work entitled “Teich” ( , Ike ), shown at the 8th exhibition, received the Asahi Shimbun newspaper award . In 1957 Tokuoka was elected to the Academy of Arts, in 1966 he was awarded the Cultural Order as a person with special cultural merits .

Many of Tokuoka's pictures show the classic theme of "flowers and birds" ( 花鳥 図 , Kachō-zu ) in a quiet, simple, decorative way. - Other pictures are “Red Pine” ( 赤松 , Akamatsu ; 1956), an almost abstract picture on which two red-brown and one light-colored poles can be seen, and “Harvested fields” ( 刈 田 , Karita ; 1960).

In 2012, the Japanese Post issued an 80-yen postage stamp within the series "60 Years of the National Museum of Modern Art Tōkyō and 50 Years of the National Museum of Modern Art Kyoto ", the painting of Tokuoka with the title "In the rear park, after the rain" ( 後 苑 雨後 , Kōen ugo ) from 1927 shows. A flowering peony bush is depicted against a hazy background, under which a bird sits on a stone border.

Remarks

  1. Teiten ( 帝 展 ) was the usual short form for "Teikoku bijutsu tenrankai" ( 帝国 美術展 覧 会 ). After 1945 the exhibition was continued in a new form as "Nihon bijutsu tenrankai", or Nitten for short.
