Life

During the First World War , Hoffman served in the Russian army and fought in the Caucasus. He then worked as a platoon leader. In 1924 he became a member of the CPSU .

From July 1938 Hoffman was chairman of the presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Volga-German ASSR - that is, their head of state. Also since 1938 he was a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR .

With the beginning of the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, the situation changed dramatically for Hoffmann. Although he had spoken out clearly against the Third Reich and fascism, he was removed from all political offices in September 1941. The Volga German ASSR was disbanded and its German population was deported to Central Asia and Siberia. Hoffmann was accused of sabotage, arrested by the NKVD and had to do forced labor. After the war he was free again, and could be with his family in Uzbekistan's Andijan settle. There he worked for a railway company and died at the age of 82 in 1977. In 1996 he was officially rehabilitated posthumously.
