Conrad IV (Cammin)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Conrad IV. († 1324 ), was a Roman Catholic clergyman, from 1317 until his death Bishop of Cammin in Pomerania .

Konrad was dean of the Camminer cathedral chapter . After the previous bishop of Cammin, Heinrich von Wacholz , died, the cathedral chapter elected him as his successor. On December 30, 1317, Conrad IV was first mentioned in a document as an elect , i.e. as an elected, not yet consecrated bishop. Conrad IV went to Avignon, where the Pope resided at that time (see Avignon Papacy ), was by Pope John XXII. confirmed and received episcopal ordination by the Cardinal Bishop of Porto. In February 1319 he was back in his diocese, as evidenced by a document that has been handed down.

During the tenure of Conrad IV the connection between the Bishop of Cammin and the Pomeranian dukes was close. In 1320 the dukes Wartislaw IV of Pomerania-Wolgast and Otto I of Pomerania-Stettin symbolically gave their lands to the diocese as fiefs, in 1321 they took the diocese under their protection. Above all, however, Bishop Konrad IV was able to buy the town and country of Cammin from the dukes in 1321 .

Relations with the neighboring Archbishopric of Gniezno remained tense: after the lands of Schlawe and Stolp came to the Duchy of Pomerania in 1317, the Bishopric of Cammin took over ecclesiastical authority in these lands and ousted the Archbishopric of Gniezno. Against a possible attack from Poland, Bishop Konrad IV concluded an alliance with Duke Wartislaw IV and the Teutonic Order state in 1320 .

Bishop Konrad IV died in 1324. After his death, on November 14, 1324, the Pope appointed Arnold von Eltz as the new bishop. However, he was only able to take up his office with difficulty, as the Camminer cathedral chapter had its own candidates, probably first the cathedral dean Johannes Hacke , who later became bishop of Verden, and then Ludwig von Henneberg .
