Konrad KM-011

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Konrad KM-011 was a prototype developed by Konrad Motorsport for the 1991 World Sports Car Championship , of which only one was built.

development

After the FIA decided to only allow 3.5-liter naturally aspirated engines in the Sports Car World Championship from the 1992 season and the tried and tested Porsche 962C with turbo engine no longer complied with the regulations, many teams had to look for an alternative. Konrad Motorsport decided on an in-house design and won Lamborghini as an engine supplier. After the Italians had tried in vain to establish themselves in Group C2 with the Countach QVX in 1986 , they now saw a good chance of returning to the World Sports Car Championship. Because of the new engine regulations, the Lamborghini 3512 3.5L V12 , which was used in Formula 1 by Ligier and Modena team, could be used.

Races

The KM-011 was completed in the fifth round of the World Sportscar Championship in 1991 on the Nürburgring . It was tested there for the first time in qualifying, but the team has not yet completed any timed laps. The duo of Franz Konrad and Stefan Johansson qualified for the race one last time with the Porsche 962C, which had been in use since the beginning of the season.

When asked about his first impressions, team boss and driver Franz Konrad answered :

“The Lamborghini 12-cylinder is of course a fantastic engine. And the whole handling is just like a formula car, it soon drives like a go-kart, so it is actually no comparison to the Porsche (note: Porsche 962C ). You have to get used to it first, you even zigzag the first lap a bit. I have to say the first impression was very good, I feel very comfortable in the car. "

- Frank Konrad

In the last three races of the season, Konrad Motorsport only competed with the KM-011. However, the car was plagued by major reliability problems and so Konrad / Johansson usually only got a few laps.

Between the races in Mexico and Autopolis, Konrad Motorsport flew the KM-011 back to Europe, where Franz Konrad took part in the last race of the Interserie season in Zeltweg. He finished the first race in seventh place, in the second race he did not see the checkered flag. This put him in 16th place in the addition of the two races, which earned him no points.

Konrad Motorsport registered for the Sports Car World Championship in 1992 , but never competed. The planned drivers were Franz Konrad and Bob Wollek .

The start of the second race of the Interseries at the Nürburgring was the only start of the Konrad KM-011 in 1992. Only Franz Konrad drove there, who finished third in the first run and fourth in the second, thus collecting eleven championship points. As a result, he finished the drivers' championship in 14th place and the team classification in 17th place.
