Stasys Šimkus Conservatory Klaipėda
The Klaipėda Stasys Šimkus Conservatory is a music school ( conservatory ) and middle school (with a high school diploma ) in the port city of Klaipėda , the third largest city in Lithuania .
history
On September 30, 1923, the conservatory was opened on the initiative of the composer Stasys Šimkus . There were sections for piano and organ, string instruments, wind instruments and composition (special theory). In 1924 the orchestra department was set up and a symphony orchestra was founded. In January 1925 the school was nationalized and in May the first orchestra concert took place. In 1927 the pedagogical department was established. Here the music teachers were prepared. In 1948, the seven-year children's music school was opened at the conservatory. In 1951 the General Education Department and in 1952 Folk Instruments Department were established.
In 1959 the school became a music technology center. In 1969 it became a high school . In 1981 the Klaipėda Art Middle School (now E. Balsys Art High School ) was opened at the school .
