Konstantinas Sirvydas

Konstantinas Sirvydas (* 1579 in Troškūnai ; † August 8, 1631 in Vilnius ) was a Lithuanian author and lexicographer .

Life

Sirvydas attended the Jesuit schools in Vilnius, Tartu , Riga and Njaswisch and then studied in Pultusk and Vilnius. There he did his doctorate as professor for linguistics and worked there for a total of 10 years. From 1612 he taught at the Vilniaus universitetas and preached in the St. Jonas Church.

The literature in the Lithuanian language consolidated its position in the 16th and 17th centuries through Konstantinas Sirvydas. Around 1620 he published the Dictionarium trium linguarum , the first printed Lithuanian dictionary . Sirvydas was instrumental in the education and enrichment of the Lithuanian language and remained without competition until the 19th century. In 1629 he wrote the book Punktai sakymu , a translation of the Bible into Lithuanian.

Konstantinas Sirvydas died of tuberculosis in 1631 .
