Contacts or Address Book (before OS X Mountain Lion ) is an Apple program for managing phone numbers, addresses, and other contact information. It is part of the two operating systems OS X and iOS .

properties

With NeXTStep , and since the first version of Mac OS X was released , the program has been an integral part of the operating system - initially as an address book (Address Book.app) and from OS X 10.8 as contacts (Contacts.app), as under iOS.

In addition to integration into other Apple products (e.g. form letters in Pages and of course e-mail addresses in Mail ), synchronization (comparison of contact data) with various servers such as Microsoft Exchange and Google Contacts is possible, with which Apple Cloud iCloud can be used to enable push synchronization with the versions of the app for iOS. Thanks to the support of the vCard system, popular cell phones and PDAs can also be supplied with contacts files. LDIF and CSV files are also imported . To communicate with other programs, the app uses a C and Objective-C - API and supports AppleScript .

Entries can be combined in groups, manually or using Spotlight support in "intelligent" groups. Since the introduction of Apple Maps , addresses can be displayed on a map. Phone numbers are automatically formatted as they are entered. Duplicates in the database are recognized automatically.

The program's print function enables automatically generated digital print templates for address labels, envelopes, mailing lists or pocket address books to be output to a printer .

Integration with other Mac OS X programs

Due to the deep anchoring in the system, other programs are also granted access to the addresses - with the prior consent of the user: The address book can save recipient addresses used by Mail , URLs in address book cards appear in Apple Safaris "address book" bookmarks and contacts in Messages can be assigned to address book cards. In addition, birthdays saved in "Contacts" can be displayed in the calendar .
