Kontalk is a free instant messaging - client for smartphones . It is available for the Android operating system and platform-independent as a Java desktop client. The protocol is based on XMPP, which is supplemented by its own extensions.

Functions

In addition to instant messaging, it is possible to exchange photos, contacts, voice messages and locations. Since February 12, 2017, this has also been possible in group chats.

For financing purposes, donations are accepted via the in-app products function. No additional functions are activated with a donation.

Availability

The current installation packages can be obtained free of charge from the Google Play Store , F-Droid , Amazon Appstore and the developer website.

Currently (April 2020) the desktop version can only be used in conjunction with the Android client.

safety

End-to-end encryption with OpenPGP is used. The key pair is generated automatically during the initial setup and only the public key is sent to the server. By default, all messages are encrypted and signed.

Additional users are found by comparing hashes of the phone numbers from the phone's contact list.

The source code for the client and server can be viewed on GitHub .
