Jérôme Souchier
Jérôme Souchier SOCist (* 1508 in Auvergne , † 1571 in Rome ) was a French cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
Jérôme Souchier was born in 1508 in Auvergne, the son of a noble family. As a young man he became a monk of the Cistercian - Abbey Montpeyroux . He was later sent to the Cistercian Academy in Paris , where he passed exams in philosophy and theology . He then received the sacrament of Orders . From 1550 to 1571 he was abbot of Clairvaux monastery . He took part in the Council of Trent from 1562 to 1563 . From 1567 to 1571 he was also abbot of the Cîteaux monastery and thus abbot general of the Cistercian Order.
In the consistory of January 24, 1569, Pope Pius V created him cardinal priest and awarded him the titular church of San Matteo in Merulana on January 24, 1569 .
Jérôme Souchier died in Rome in 1571. He was buried in Santa Croce in Gerusalemme in Rome.
