Bellaigue Monastery (1137)

The Montpeyroux (Mons Petrosus) monastery is a former Cistercian abbey in France . It is located in the commune of Puy-Guillaume in the Puy-de-Dôme department , Auvergne region , 12 km north of Thiers , on the right bank of the Crédogne .

history

The monastery was founded by Foulques de Jaligny in 1126 as the second daughter monastery of Bonnevaux monastery in Dauphiné (in today's Isère department ), the sixth daughter monastery of Cîteaux monastery . It was the mother monastery of Bellaigue Abbey . The church was consecrated in 1175 by Pons, Bishop of Clermont , a former monk from Cîteaux. The monastery was richly endowed by the Counts of Auvergne and Forez . The abbey was sacked in 1467, the monks were driven out, looted again during the Wars of Religion and set on fire in 1685, but restored immediately, but without the cloister. The repeal took place in the course of the French Revolution around 1791.

Buildings and plant

Parts of the portal, the nave and the north aisle of the church with five bays have been preserved, two of which have the vaults in the side aisle. The church was built more in the classic Auvergne style. The choir and transept have completely disappeared. The convent buildings and the abbot house essentially date to the 18th century. A pietà from the church is kept in the church of Puy-Guillaume. The community is trying to find a new use.
